Athlete report : Gabriel Sardain raced Triathlon Sassenberg

Sassenberg Triathlon Reflecting on an journey this past weekend at the Sassenberg Triathlon. The training of the past weeks truly paid off, and the results are finally emerging.

Covering distances of 1.7km swimming, 66km cycling, and a 15km run, I managed to cut almost 3 minutes from last year’s time.

The swim this time wasn’t quite up to par, and I immediately noticed that I felt slower compared to last year, lacking the pace I needed. Nonetheless, I managed to exit the water in 6th place after completing the 1700m swim.

Shifting gears to the cycling part, it went pretty good . Navigating 3 rounds of 22km each, my cycling „strategy“ unfolded as follows:

1st round – establishing momentum and maintaining a steady pace.
2nd round – accelerating the tempo, surpassing my projected speed.
3rd round – strategically adjusting the pace to ensure a comfortable heart rate transition for the run.

Huge thanks to my partner Squeezy. Their unwavering support and race nutrition played a pivotal role in powering me through the event.

The run phase was a mix of solid and good. While I maintained control, the first lap out of three didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped. I struggled to find my stride initially, costing me some time. However, I managed to pick up the pace slowly from km 6 onward. I’m on a quest to understand why those initial kilometers are a challenge for me. Nevertheless, the progress is evident, and I’m moving in the right direction.

Final result: securing the 22nd place out of 122 participants overall and proudly clinching the 4th place in the M25 age group.

This journey underlines that consistency breeds success. I’m eagerly looking forward to the upcoming races.

After a week of slightly reduced training, I’m gearing up tomorrow for another volume-filled Sunday.
Looking ahead, the Luxembourg Sprint Triathlon Championships are on the horizon next Saturday. Excited to compete in Luxembourg once again and take on the challenge!
